Relative clauses

1. Pronombres Relativos (Relative Pronouns)

- Who: Para personas.
Ejemplo: Sam is the guy who helped me.
- Which: Para cosas o animales.
Ejemplo: This is the book which I love.
- That: Sustituye a who o which en cláusulas definidas.
Ejemplo: I admire people that work hard.
- Whose: Para posesiones.
Ejemplo: Elsa is the girl whose video went viral.
- When: Para tiempo.
Ejemplo: I remember the day when I passed my exam.
- Where: Para lugares.
Ejemplo: This is the café where we met.

2. Cláusulas Definidas (Defining Relative Clauses)

- Dan información esencial (sin ella, la oración no tiene sentido).
- Sin comas.
- Ejemplos:
- That’s the phone which/that I really like. (cosa).
- Sam is the person who/that knows the answer. (persona).
- This is the street where I live. (lugar como objeto).

Regla clave:

- Si el lugar es el sujeto de la cláusula, usa which/that:
Ejemplo: The shop which/that sells shoes is nearby.
- Si el lugar es el objeto, usa where:
Ejemplo: The street where I live is quiet.

3. Cláusulas No Definidas (Non-Defining Clauses)

- Dan información extra (si se quita, la oración sigue teniendo sentido).
- Van entre comas.
- No se usa that.
- Ejemplos:
- My brother, who is a doctor, lives in Paris.
- This laptop, which I bought yesterday, is amazing.

4. Errores Comunes

- NO uses what en cláusulas relativas:
❌ The book what I’m reading is good.
✅ The book which/that I’m reading is good.
- NO uses comas en cláusulas definidas:
❌ The woman, who is my neighbor, is a teacher. (si es esencial: sin comas).
